Bethan C.

How would you describe your approach to counselling?

My therapeutic approach is a humanistic-existential one that looks to explore the client’s unique experiences and how they may affect their overall wellbeing and place in the world now. It can allow client’s a space to explore uncertainties that are a big part of life and existence such as death, fear of the unknown, freedom and responsibility around making choices towards change, and the meaning of life, to name but a few. The approach is person centred and aims to increase self-awareness, personal growth and empowers clients to make meaningful changes to live a more authentic and fulfilling life.

What do you think are the most important factors in the counselling relationship?

For me trust is essential, built on honesty, respect, and confidentiality. A client needs to feel safe to be able to speak freely and so during the first session we explore the counselling contract, expectations of the sessions, how we may work together towards goals and whether there are any limitations to our work or anything that may place a client at harm. I believe the client is the expert of their own life and so it is just as important that I gain an empathic understanding of the client’s feelings and experiences, seeing the world from their point of view.

Do you have any special interests or client groups that you work a lot with?

I have a real interest in both common and complex mental health conditions and rather than see a client as their diagnosis, will work with clients to explore how that has an impact on how they may relate to others, how they may view themselves and how they navigate through life. I have also worked a lot with grief, our internal experience and process of loss which can come from many parts of our lives, not just through bereavement, and manifest in many ways, not just through emotion but both psychological and physical as well.

What do you enjoy most about your work as a counsellor?

Firstly, it is a privilege to be allowed into a client’s inner world and be able to explore it with them. The trust placed in me is an honour and something that I do not take for granted. I like how counselling offers a unique relationship we do not experience in the wider world, allowing a space where we get a fuller understanding of ourselves, our relationships and place in the world. As a counsellor I get to experience meaningful human connections, and find I am always learning from the clients I work with. It is an enriching experience, and I always learn something new.
