Cara S.

How would you describe your approach to counselling?

I am a dedicated and compassionate counsellor, trained in Person-Centered Therapy. With a professional diploma in this approach, I am committed to helping you navigate life’s challenges in a safe and supportive environment. I understand that seeking counselling can be a daunting step, and I am here to make that journey as comfortable as possible for you. My goal is to build a strong therapeutic bond based on trust and mutual respect, where you feel heard, understood, and valued.

What do you think are the most important factors in the counselling relationship?

I feel that trust is one of the most important factors; my clients need to feel that they can share openly with me without fear of judgement or breach of confidentiality. Trust builds over time through consistency, reliability and genuine care. Empathy and being empathic are also hugely important.  My ability to deeply understand and connect with my client’s feelings and experiences is crucial. Empathy helps clients feel seen, heard and validated. Collaboration within the counselling relationship is very important. Counselling is most effective when it’s a joint effort. Setting goals together and working as a team empowers clients and fosters engagement in the process. And last but certainly not least is Cultural Sensitivity and Respect. Understanding and respecting my client’s background, identity, and values is essential for building rapport and avoiding misunderstandings.

Do you have any special interests or client groups that you work a lot with?

As a trauma-informed counsellor, I am particularly sensitive to the complexities of trauma and its impact on mental health. Trauma can profoundly affect one’s emotional and psychological well-being and understanding this is crucial for effective therapy. I integrate this understanding into my practice to ensure that you feel safe and supported throughout your therapeutic journey. Being trauma-informed means recognising the signs of trauma, acknowledging its effects, and providing care that avoids re-traumatisation. This approach is essential for creating a healing environment where you can feel secure and empowered.

What do you enjoy most about your work as a counsellor?

What I enjoy most about being a counsellor is the privilege of sitting alongside people during some of their most vulnerable and courageous moments. It’s incredibly meaningful to witness someone begin to understand themselves more deeply, to see the weight lift as they find clarity or relief. I genuinely care about creating a space where people feel safe to be themselves—without pressure or judgment. Every person I work with teaches me something new, and I feel honoured to be part of their journey, even for a short time. It’s the human connection, the trust, and the small steps forward that make this work so fulfilling for me.

Tell us something interesting about yourself.

Something interesting about me is that I’ve always been fascinated by people’s stories—even as a child, I was the one who asked lots of questions and really listened. That natural curiosity eventually led me to counselling. Outside of work, I love spending time in nature, with my dog—it helps me recharge and reflect. I am slightly obsessed with dogs and have a big fluffy Alaskan Malamute called Luna
